ADHD Resources

I am thrilled when people come to me or refer me with their ADHD questions.  I’ve spent hours trying to research and sift through the ridiculous and get to the helpful. It’s all out there!

Here is a list of my “go to” references and resources.

Taking Charge of ADHD – Russell A. Barkley PhD

Great for parents of young children.

This is the book our therapist handed us after our son’s diagnosis.  I fell in love with it when he referenced Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s work, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  Dr. Barkley uses these habits to frame the role parents should play in an ADHD family. In the spirit of full disclosure, I work for Dr. Covey’s company, FranklinCovey.  I felt at home reading this book.   Dr. Barkley is one of my favorite ADHD experts.  He has loads of great data that I have used in writing my book.

Healing ADD – The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD – Dr. Daniel Amen

I despise the title, I like the content. I’m sure some publisher insisted on this horrible title.  This book is great for sorting out all of the cluttered info about ADD into a some “buckets”.  As Dr. Amen will share, not all ADD is created equal.  It can be confusing and frustrating.  Dr. Amen has studied brain scans of those with ADD and describes very clearly the 6 different types of ADD and a step by step plan for each type.  I found the supplement info particularly helpful.

Driven to Distraction – revised edition – Edward Hallowell, M.D. and John Ratey, M.D.

This is a great book if you want to get insight on what it’s like to have ADD.

Dr. Hallowell is one of the great ADD experts. This was one of the first comprehensive books on the topic of ADD.

The ADHD Effect on Marriage – Melissa Orlov

The book to read if there is ADHD in your marriage.  Read it before you need it.  It saved my sanity.  Melissa Orlov has partnered with Dr. Hallowell.  Melissa Orlov saved her marriage and has practical and helpful information to share.  You will feel like she’s in your living room as you read her book because she describes exactly what it’s like to be in an ADHD marriage.  I have also purchased her teleseminar. Worth every penny!

ADD & Loving it?! – movie/video

This lighthearted and downright funny look at ADD is just what the doctor ordered. Watch this with the whole family to keep your sense of humor in the mix!

ADDitude Magazine – Living Well with Attention Deficit

Tons of resources, free membership, community forum.  It’s ALL there.

ADDerword – Bryan Hutchinson

Bryan is an ADDer.  He has ebooks, a blog, contributes regularly to ADDitude Magazine.  I like him.

There are thousands of other books and resources out there.  Please share helpful ones in the comment section for us!

Be careful, there’s so much out there and some of it is crap, some is confusing, go easy on the research.

My advice is not to look for a cause or a reason.  We don’t know what causes it.  It just is.  Accept it and find strategies to live with it in a way that nurtures your relationships.

Disclosure: these links are affiliate links to my Amazon account.  If you choose to buy from any of these links I get a few pennies.  Isn’t it worth it that I read through all the crap to bring you some good stuff.
